10/27/14

Hi All!

In Math class today, we worked on writing and solving equations from word problems. We will be completing a check-in during class tomorrow. This check-in does not count as a quiz; it is just an individual classwork assignment to see how you are doing with this unit. For homework, there is a review sheet on solving equations. I am reminding you that there is a back side, and that I am expecting #1-9 to be completed for tomorrow!

In Algebra 1 class today, we played a game to practice function form and solving formulas for variables. We also started our discussion on word problems. During class, we wrote equations for the 4 word problems. For homework, you must solve the 4 equations from the word problems. Reminder that your test for chapter 3 is on Thursday. I am available for extra help/review on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday this week!

WORD PROBLEM # 1: Two friends, John and Tim, are going on a trip. John left his house traveling at an average speed of 45 miles per hour. Tim arrived 2 hours after John and traveled at an average speed of 30 miles per hour. How long did it take each person to reach the college?

WORD PROBLEM #2:You and your friend decide to meet up for frozen yogurt. You live 8 miles apart. If you start to travel east at a rate of 4 miles per hour and your friend starts to travel west at 6 miles per hour, how long will it take for you to meet? verbal model: your distance + your friend's distance = total distance to travel.

WORD PROBLEM #3:You and your family are going away on vacation and decide to take two different cars. The first car travels at a rate of 40 miles per hour and reaches the vacation spot in t hours. The second car travels at a rate of 50 miles per hour and arrives at the vacation spot 2 hours earlier than the first car. How long does it take the first car to reach the vacation spot? How long does it take the second car to reach the vacation spot?

WORD PROBLEM #4:You and your friend decide to meet up to ride your bikes. You live 9 miles apart. If you travel west at a rate of 3 miles per hour and your friend travels east at a rate of 5 miles per hour, how long will it take for you to meet? Verbal model: your distance + your friend's distance = total distance to travel.
